Alan started playing the cornet at 8 years of age with Desford Colliery youth band. At the age of 12, he joined his first of many championships section bands: William Davis Construction Band. In 1989, he auditioned and accepted a position in the cornet section with Brighouse & Rastrick Band, becoming one the youngest players ever to join the band at 13 years of age.
After leaving school, Alan studied music at Salford College and then went to Barnsley College to study conducting under Major Peter Parkes.
Between 1990 and 2001, he has played solo cornet and Repiano positions with Britannia Building Society, Grimethorpe Colliery and Williams Fairey Engineering.
In 2001, he was offered the opportunity to take up the Soprano cornet. He later went on to be soprano cornet player with the Leyland JJB, Brighouse & Rastrick and finally Yorkshire Building Society Band.
As a player, Alan’s highlights have included touring Brazil, Australia and Canada. Other memorable events have been playing with The Beautiful South and featuring in the film Brassed Off. Alan has also achieved successful wins at: North West Area, Yorkshire Area, All England Masters, British Open, Brass in Concert and The Europeans.
2004 kick started Alan’s conducting career by becoming resident conductor with the Marsden Silver band. After gaining recognition as a conductor, he was appointed resident conductor with the Sellers International Band. Alan then went on to freelance conducting with Wingates, Carlton Main Frickley and Pemberton JJB Band, whilst continuing to help out bands on Bb and Soprano cornet.
In November 2008, Alan was appointed as MD of Flixton band. Alan is looking forward to working with the band and hopes that this is the beginning of a long and successful partnership.
