Flixton Band maintains a proud tradition of music making, which dates back over 140 years. The Band is currently graded first section by the National Brass Band Association of Great Britain, the highest of any Trafford Band. Flixton Band is currently self-funding and does not benefit from sponsorship. Originally formed in 1877, the Flixton Volunteer Band was the result of the formation of the Flixton 1st Volunteer Battalion, Manchester Regiment. (This was the Territorial Army of the period.) The band re-formed in 1967, when it became known as the Flixton Silver Band, and was granted permission to use the Urmston coat of arms on band uniforms and stationery. To this day we still use the coat of arms in association with our band.
Adie Smith is our Musical Director.
Adie joined us in 2023 after a stellar playing career as a percussionist with the likes of Wingates, Fairey’s and Black Dyke, winning every major championship.

Great to see you are still going strong, I was a member back in the 70s 80s Bb Base Player, our rehearsal room was old scout Hut Methodist Church then St Johns on irlam road also my now wife of 38 years was the Secretary maybe in the 80s.
I don,t suppose any members from that era are still around? would be interested to know
Alan Kelly you may remember – he has been in the Band since 1972 and is still playing. His brother, Peter, has been our treasurer for nearly as long.
Mike Rowley also played with us in the 70’s and again more recently. He keeps in touch as a Vice President.
Other than that we’re all relative newcomers! Can you fill in any of our gaps in who our musical directors were between 1984 and 1988?
