The band met in Flixton at noon on Friday to travel to the annual Saddleworth Whit Friday contests. A few minutes before midnight we completed our seventh and final performance. Apart from a brief shower at Lydgate we were lucky with the weather.
Our performances of the contest march, The Wizard, found favour with some adjudicators, and our street ‘march’, Valerie, proved popular with the crowds. We were the top placed 1st Section Band at Dobcross and picked up a prize at Lees and Scouthead, where we were the first band to perform. We were delighted to be placed 16th overall (aggregate of 6 best results) given the competition from the very best of Championship Section bands.
By Sunday evening we were back on Saddleworth to perform a live-streamed concert at the Boarshurst Band Club in Greenfield. A traditional first half programme was followed by a more contemporary second half. Both were very well received by those following on-line as well as those in the room. Our soloists were on top form and there was special recognition for our young star, Harvey, who has excelled since taking on the challenge of playing the soprano cornet.
Between times our Community Band took to the stage in the Market Square of Kirkby Lonsdale for their first ever contest performance. We are delighted that they performed to their best and won the ‘training band’ section.
