May 2018 – Present
Heather started to learn to play the trumpet at the age of 7. Living in Birmingham, the brass band movement wasn’t as strong as it is in the north, but Heather thankfully joined the Birmingham Schools’ Brass Band at secondary school, and worked her way up to principal cornet via all other cornet positions and flugel horn. Heather went back to playing her trumpet in Sheffield University’s wind band and orchestra, but was asked to join the university’s brass band in her third year, and it was then that she remembered how much she loved it (and the beer that came with it!)
Moving to Manchester in 2006, Heather decided that it was time to pick up her cornet and first joined Stockport Silver and then moved on to Hawk Green Brass Band. Following the decision to start a family, Heather and her partner moved to Urmston and it was there that she joined the ‘mighty’ Flixton Band. She hasn’t looked back since.
Heather’s most memorable banding moment:
“Performing in my first regional contest in Blackpool with Hawk Green and coming a brilliant 2nd”
