February 2022 – Present
Ian started playing trombone at school and was soon involved in his local youth band but Ian is tall – so tall in fact that he was the only person in the youth band who could reach the mouthpiece on the BBb Bass.
And so the die was cast and Ian went through his youth carrying around a very large case to shouts of “I bet you wish you played the flute”. Despite the challenges Ian went on to play with several bands in the South of England but a move North, a change of career and family meant that banding fell away until an old friend persuaded him to come and watch her band on a very wet Whit Friday. That then led to some non-contesting playing for pleasure. It was not long before word got out that there was an extra bass player in the North West and Ian helped out various bands before Flixton persuaded him back onto the contest stage at the 2022 NW Areas.
Ian decided that the band was quite a nice bunch and the offer of not one but three test pieces to put in random wrong notes and lots of cake was too much to resist. Unfortunately a more than 30-year old grade 3 trombone certificate was not good enough, so Ian has ended up at the back playing the low notes.
